First Man - AR The Moon
Humans have observed the moon from the earth's surface since the dawn of time, but what would it take to actually travel there? We wanted people to look up at the night’s sky and visualize themselves following in Neil Armstrong’s footsteps from anywhere in the world.
Point your phone at the moon to uncover the remarkable journey of Apollo 11. We aimed to inspire people to step outside and gaze at the sky. Once the moon is recognized, you can unlock clips from the film, mission control and a panoramic view of the lunar landing site.
We combined Google’s Vision API with our proprietary algorithm to identify the moon. The process begins by locating bright areas and then validating these against millions of moon images from Google. For users accessing the site during the day or when the moon is not visible, we included a ‘virtual sky’ feature that detects the moon within a nighttime panorama scene.
I conceptualized, designed, and executed the creative pitch in collaboration with the Creative Director. This pitch was reviewed by Universal Pictures and selected for inclusion in the marketing campaign for First Man.
I designed a sophisticated user interface that seamlessly aligns with the movie's theme and the era it represents. Despite augmented reality being a cutting-edge technology, we aimed to ensure that the design reflects the 1969 aesthetic of the film rather than appearing overly futuristic.
